Tumba Festival starts
WILLEMSTAD - Tonight is the 45th edition of the Tumba Festival. Only 51 songs will be part of the festival this year, which is less than the average of 60 tumbas that participate annually. Five tumba did not pass the composition test, which means that their composition was not approved by the Curaçao Music and Artist Association (AMAK). AMAK is the organizer of the largest music event on the island.
Carnival was from the onset a celebration which had its own local accents. In the history of the carnival of Curaçao an important element is the acceptance of the local form of music and dance called tumba. Carnival of Brazil has its samba, Trinidad its calypso, and Curaçao its tumba.
Weeks before the great march, this special festival is held to choose the winning tumba, which will be played during the road marches.
The tumba festival has become an event, which can count with great interest from the public. The competition is fierce. The winner becomes 'Rei(na) di Tumba', King (or Queen) of Tumba.
The tumba festival nowadays lasts from Monday to Friday, with one day of rest on Thursday.
The festival takes place until Friday at the Festival Center in Brievengat.
