Uncertainty around restoration Cinelandia

WILLEMSTAD – Recently Minister Dominique Adriaens of Traffic, Communications and Urban Planning announced the restoration of the old Cinelandia building in Punda near the new Pietermaai parking building. The Minister said that the building will be restored by CMOG, which is the owner and will house a Grand Café after its completion.

To everyone’s surprise, Fernando da Costa Gomes, owner of CMOG gave a declaration to the Dutch newspaper Antilliaans Dagblad that what the Minister has said is not entirely certain. The art deco building in Punda has long been the subject of a battle between the owner and the foundation Pro Monumento, after it was classified as a protected monument. Both Pro Monumento as the owner of the property, build in 1941, are surprised by the statements of the Minister, because the details of the plans are not finished yet.

The building is in very bad shape and must be renovated as soon as possible. It is becoming a danger to the public trafficking in that area.
