VMSC has some doubts about new hospital Otrabanda

New hospitalWILLEMSTAD - The Association of Medical Specialists Curacao (VMSC) is very pleased that the construction of a new hospital seems to be in sight. Nonetheless, the VMSC places some comments on the whole process to come to a new hospital in Otrabanda. The VMSC wants to be careful that this hospital does not become just like the new airport: delivered within the established budget, but with a design that does not meet the local situation nor a future-oriented construction build with quality material.

The design of the new hospital is exactly the same design proposed earlier by the same builders (Usona / Sona / Berenschot) but for the Amstel terrain.

This design was hardly discussed in the past with the medical specialists. One of the major concerns of the medical specialists was that there is no central laboratory planned in the draft (except for a very small lab for acute cases). The number of beds, the layout and content were conceived by the builders themselves.

Furthermore the VMSC complains about the limited space for eight ophthalmologists, the inadequate space for the oncology daycare and there are still unmet demands on the table with respect to the acute wards IC, the emergency room and the NICU. According to the medical specialist, Abbad most departments in the hospital Sehos found the consultation time too short.

The VMSC is also concerned about the exploitation of the new hospital. It is calculated on the basis of the hospital’s operating costs of the year 2010.
