Warning signs placed in Parke Ascension

TurtleWILLEMSTAD – Warning signs have been placed at the Ascension Park. The warnings are in Papiamentu and Chinese. The signs indicate that turtles should be left alone.

At the Ascension Natural Park you can see the turtles from the waterfront. At Boka Ascension, in addition to the green sea turtle (tortuga blanco), there are multiple species to be seen, including the kawama (loggerhead) and hawksbill sea turtles. There are also very small turtles found, which had just abandoned their egg. There are fishermen who regularly come into the area and they catch these turtles and they take them along. By law, the tortoise is a protected species. This also includes the removal of the eggs. This is punishable by law.

Everyone's responsibility

Thanks to observant visitors who report abuses as catching turtles, several of these creatures have been rescued in time. The area is accessible free of charge and the Unique Curaçao Foundation is counting on visitors to consider the care of the area everyone's responsibility. The foundation can be reached at 4628998 for more information or to report abuse.
