Will there be a general strike?
WILLEMSTAD - Is there today a general strike or not? That is the question. Officially, the unions gave the Minister of Justice Nelson Navarro and Minister of Social Development, Labor and Welfare Ruthmilda Larmonie-Cecilia until today to come up with an acceptable proposal. Whether it will come to that remains unclear.
The union SGTK called the strike, because their members, workers employed by contractors on the oil refinery terrain want a raise and also their previously promised bonus. These demands amount to about 1.5 million guilders. That money must come from somewhere, but that is not clear yet. The government already said that they cannot take funds from public companies in the energy sector to pay the contract workers.
Prime Minister Dr. Bernhard Whiteman declared last week that the government could not find a legal way to help the contract workers with the needed funds. These contractors are private companies and the government cannot take public funds to pay the employees of these contractors.
This is why Navarro and Cecilia-Larmonie are trying to come up with a solution. According to several sources, various unions on the island are on the edge and they are waiting for the call to take the streets.
