2.1 million for major clean up

GGDWILLEMSTAD – Last week the big cleanup against mosquitoes started. 120 people from different sectors are employed in this major undertaking from the Health Department. The cost for the cleaning of the entire island has been estimated at 2.1 million guilders.

“That is the price that must be paid for all the pollution on the island,” said Division Director of Health Sirving Keli during the press conference that was recently held to explain the project.

“The cause of pollution is easy and cheap, but the price to clean everything is high,” says Keli. The cost for this year amount to about 400,000 guilders, the rest is budgeted for 2015. For the cleanup, which will take about three months, additional staff will be deployed, including 60 among welfare recipients, unemployed and twelve employees from Fundashon pa Stimula Edukashon i Formashon di Bario (Sefba).

Starting next Wednesday there will be briefings held at ten locations for local residents. Sefba employees will give information on mosquito control, chikungunya and the cleaning of the neighborhoods. Residents will be advised of the location and time through flyers and advertisements in the press.
