340 tons of drugs intercepted by FOL

FOL BaseWILLEMSTAD – The Forward Operation Location (FOL), which is the American Air Force located in Curaçao has intercepted a total of 339,707 kilograms of drugs between the period of October 2012 until the end of September 2013.

This is evident from the evaluation of the implementation of the Convention on Forward Operating Locations in Curaçao and Aruba, which was recently offered to the Parliament of Curaçao through the Ministry of General Affairs.

It also appears from the report that several small maintenance projects have taken place at Hato airport.

During the above mentioned period, 436 flights were conducted from Hato airport that amounts a total of 3293 flight hours. From the Aruba Airport Reina Beatrix no flights were performed. These flights have contributed to the interception of 321,000 kilograms of cocaine, 18,703 kilograms of marijuana and four kilograms of heroin.

This is a lot more than what was intercepted during the period from October 2011 to September 2012. In that period, the American planes intercepted a total of 162,137 kilograms of drugs, consisting of 152,389 kilograms of cocaine, 9747 kilograms of marijuana and one kilogram of heroin. That was also done with fewer flights. During the previous year, 524 flights were performed, which amounts to 4370 flight hours.

In addition, 151 missions (out of 436) were carried out, whereby the so-called "Host Nation Riders" (HNR's) were needed. These observers have to ride on flights that cross the borders with third countries. They represent their government during the overflight of the sovereign territory of a third country and provide expertise in the area overflown.

The number of missions over Colombian territory was 59 and the number of missions over Colombian territorial and international waters was 92. HNR's had all Colombian nationals.

The FOL commander is in direct contact with the Commander of the Dutch Navy in the Caribbean and the Consul General of the United States. The existing close partnership between the Royal Navy, local authorities, the FOL leadership and USA Consulate also continued during this reporting period. This cooperation is seen as very constructive by all.
