A year after the murder of a political leader

Helmin WielsWILLEMSTAD – It was exactly a year ago when the island was shocked with the news that the political leader of the Pueblo Soberano party, which was the largest and most popular party after the 2012 election, was murdered on the beach at Mari Pampoen. As a matter of fact, this was not only a shock for Curacao, but for the entire Dutch Kingdom. This was only the second time that a politician was murdered in the Kingdom.

All the countries in the Kingdom have offered assistance to Curacao to help solve this case. A year later, only the executors of the murder are in custody. Those who ordered the murder are still wandering free, either on the island or somewhere else.

It was on May 5, 2013 at 16.55 when the police received information that Wiels was shot and was not giving a sign of life. Around 18:45, the police doctor confirmed the politician’s death. The following day, a special investigation team was appointed to start an investigation and right away this team did a search of Wiels’ office and his home.

On May 7, there were two remarkable incidents. One was the Youtube video uploaded by the Martis brothers, which caused panic on the island. In this video, the Martis brothers threatened the people by saying that the first job was accomplished and that there was more to come. The second incident was a robbery at the Venetto Casino in downtown Otrabanda. According to some sources, this robbery had to do with Wiels’ case. The stolen money was used to pay the murderers of the late politician.

On May 12, the investigators walked around in the Koraal Specht and Mari Pampoen neighborhoods handing out flyers asking for help and tip in this murder case.

Wiels was buried on May 14. After that day, the investigation accelerated. The authorities already had a lead on which direction they should be heading with their investigation. Soon after, the authorities arrested Burney ‘Nini’ Fonseca, Elvis ‘Monster’ Kuwas, Dangelo Damascus and Carlos Pieters. These suspects are in preventive arrest awaiting trial in August. ‘Pretu’ was also arrested, but he committed suicide in his cell at the detention center in Barber.

Other suspects who will also have to be present during the trial are Monica Bergonje and J.D.C.B. These suspects are free awaiting their case in August.
