According to the law Schotte may remain MP until convicted

SchotteWILLEMSTAD – “As long as a Member of Parliament is not convicted, he or she may remain in parliament.” This is according to the Vice President of the Parliament of Curacao, Jaime Cordoba.

Schotte was arrested yesterday morning right after he gave an interview during a morning show on CBA Television. He is currently being held at the prison cells in Barber pending his interrogation. The former Prime Minister is suspected of forgery and money laundering.

Many in the community have wondered if Schotte should resign as an MP, but Cordoba indicates that according to the Criminal Code, no one can force Schotte to give up his seat in parliament until he is sentenced by a Judge. “He can of course resign voluntarily, but that is up to him,” Cordoba said.

Schotte’s life partner, Cicely van der Dijs was also arrested and is suspected of the same crime committed by the former Prime Minister.

Gerrit Schotte is the leader of the largest opposition party Movementu Futuro Korsou (MFK), which has 5 seats in Parliament. Schotte was the first Prime Minister of the new country Curacao.
