Asjes threatens party with resignation

AsjesWILLEMSTAD – During the weekly party meeting of the ruling party Pueblo Soberano (PS), the Prime Minister of Curaçao, Ivar Asjes declared that he does not feel he has enough support from his own party to continue at the head of the government.

During an emotional moment, the Prime Minister even expressed how much he misses the late leader of the party, Helmin Wiels. He also indicated that he cannot afford to continue speaking and defending the party like he is doing now. According to him, it looks like he’s always in conflict instead of bringing a positive contribution to the party and the government of the island. He believes that it is not up to him to constantly defend the party, but the Members of Parliament representing the party and also the leadership together with the members.

“I need you to actively support my policies,” the Prime Minister said to the supporters of the party. The past week has been very turbulent for the relationship between the Prime Minister and the MPs of his party. There are even indications that one of the MPs called Asjes corrupt during one of the faction meetings. The last incident which caused more tension between them was the dismissal of the civil servant Meendert ‘Menky’ Rojer, who constantly criticized the Prime Minister for not following in Helmin Wiels’ path.

“If you want to get rid of me, just let me know. Form a majority in parliament and adopt a motion of no confidence and I will send my resignation to the Governor. I know the way to the Governor very well,” the Prime Minister said.
