Caimin Douglas competition director CARIFTA 2017
WILLEMSTAD – In preparation for the Carifta Games 2017, various meetings are being held with the different workgroups of the local organization committee (LOC). On Saturday August 20th, Caimin Douglas – former Olympic athlete and competition director for the Carifta Games - presented to the other workgroups. Douglas, who was appointed a few months ago, is responsible for the workgroup Competition & Officials and the technical sport aspects in the SDK Stadium. The program of the competition, the jury, the volunteers on the track and the timely start of the games are all part of his responsibilities.
To have a successful event, Douglas puts emphasis on the large group of volunteers that is required for the event. They are needed before and during the games and to bring athletes from and to the sports accommodation. “Right now, it is important to gather a group of enthusiastic volunteers who can be trained on the various components. For example, we need jury members for the sprint, jumps, javelin, discus and shot put. We also need people who call the athletes to the start on time.” Says Douglas.
The registration for the volunteers and sponsors for the Carifta 2017 is already open on the website of the organization (www.carifta2017.com). The organization committee asks everyone to register for this as soon as possible to support the Carifta Games. Next year, during the Easter weekend, the Games take place at the SDK Stadium in Curacao. The Games are being seen as a starting point for many future World- and Olympic Champions from the Caribbean. For example, Usain Bolt still holds the record on the 200 meters of the Carifta Games. Yearly around 450 athletes from all over the Caribbean participate in the games.
The website and Facebook page of the Carifta Games provide more information about the developments and preparations of the Games.
