CARMABI cleans up Sargassum in national park Shete Boka and Christoffel Park

Boka Braun 13 maart 2018v1WILLEMSTAD - As recently mentioned in the news, Curacao is also dealing with Sargassum on the North shore of the island. Even though the extent of the situation cannot be compared to the situation in Bonaire, it is important to clean up the excessive Sargassum in the boka’s.

The seaweed is not dangerous or damaging, as long as it is still in open water. However, when the seaweed enters the bays and washes ashore it will start to rot, leaving behind a dangerous environment for the turtles and other species living on and around the beaches.

Boka Grandi, to be found in the Christoffelpark, is dealing with the most Sargassum at theBoka Braun 13 maart 2018v2 moment. CARMABI, the foundation responsible for the management of the parks, is currently busy with cleaning the Sargassum. In Shete Boka National Park, Sargassum is not giving any serious problems. However, the situation is being monitored continuously. Especially the Boka’s where turtles are known to lay eggs are checked out regularly and cleaned up when necessary. Therefore, Sargassum is cleaned up at Boka Braun at this moment.

"Over the past week, we have checked all areas daily. We are pleased to inform that the situation is very manageable. The team of rangers in the park cleans up the areas with excessive amounts of Sargassum immediately when necessary. At this moment we are not worried about the situation," says Dominique Adriaans, head of Parks at Carmabi. ‘We expect to clean up all the excessive Sargassum in the course of this week.’
