Chances of power outage significantly

AqualectraWILLEMSTAD – The risk of power outages in Curaçao between now and the end of May is great. Both machines 10 and 11 of the Mundo Nobo Central are off again. At this moment, there is therefore no more reserve capacity.

The utility company hopes to have the new Aggreko machines installed by late May and thereby solve the problems with the production and distribution of electricity. Until then, we will have to help ourselves according to Darick Jonis, Director of Aqualectra.

The new Aggreko’s machines will have to provide around 56 megawatts. There will be more machines compared to those removed by the Cabinet Schotte. Those Aggreko’s machines were removed back then under the condition that new investments will be made to replace them. The condition was not met.

At this moment there is no need to panic, because at this time of the year it’s pretty windy so the wind turbines can deliver 20 megawatts of power. When the wind dies down, however, the island is in trouble. Because there is no reserve capacity, the power will have to be switched on and off during maintenance or failures in certain areas of the island. Aqualectra will need 120 million guilders on short terms for investments in a new plant.
