Controversial new Healthcare Inspector Pereira

Ben-Whiteman-Gersji-Rodrigues-PereiraWILLEMSTAD - Gersji Rodrigues Pereira is the new Inspector for Health Care for Curaçao. Recently Ben Whiteman Minister of Health signed the decree. Pereira was laid off in 2008 from the IJsselmeer Hospitals in the Netherlands because of policy failure. This followed a decision by the Board of Trustees.

As chairman of the hospitals he was criticized for not taking action against lethal infection risks in the operating rooms. Seven operating rooms were closed after an investigation by the Health Inspectorate. According to the Inspectorate the management was aware of the poor air quality, but they had done nothing.

The clinics in Lelystad and Emmeloord camp for years with financial problems. Five parties have recently released a bid for the ailing hospitals.

There were also problems with Pereira in Sint Maarten. Workers from all sectors of the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) held a protest action against the hiring of the new General Director Gersji Pereira. The protest started off with the workers holding a lengthy meeting while some of the workers held up placards protesting the hiring of Pereira, who left the Netherlands because of alleged corruption and incompetence.

The post of inspector became vacant after the previous inspector, Jan Huurman left. It was then temporarily filled by Michael Mourillon. Huurman’s contract was not renewed last year. His departure met with much resistance.
