Curaçao unable to fix pollution problem
WILLEMSTAD –According to the Humane Care Foundation Curaçao (SHZC) politicians are playing with the health of the people on the island. “This is clearly a slap in the face of these people.”
“It is evident that the government cannot handle the problems with the oil refinery Isla. It is also clear that the government does not want the help from the Netherlands. The Dutch government is willing to assist the Curaçao government with this problem. This in response to the motion adopted by the Dutch parliament in which the MPs have demanded their government to come with a solution to the pollution problem,” said the representatives of the SHZC
The SHZC represents 24 residents who live in the shadow of the refinery. Together with the environmental organization SMOC, the sued the oil refinery for the amount of 75 million guilders. This is being challenged by the oil refinery.
The reaction of the foundations comes following the visit of the Dutch Minister Ronald Plasterk of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, which included a meeting with Prime Minister Ben Whiteman to talk about the Isla problems.
