Dock employees do not want to repair ship because of fear for Ebola

schip-nigeria-ebola-1WILLEMSTAD – Employees who work at the Curaçao Dry Dock Company (CDM) refused to repair a ship from Nigeria. This ship called the Prince of Seas was sent to the Caracas Baai area to dock. The employees are afraid that someone on that ship may have the Ebola virus.

Ebola is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with a strain of Ebola virus. The 2014 Ebola epidemic is the largest in history, affecting multiple countries in West Africa. The risk of an Ebola outbreak affecting people in Curaçao is very low. But these employees said that they are not taking the risk.

According to the Public Health Service, there is no risk and the ship can dock inside of the harbor according to protocol. Nigeria is no risk country and the ship has been longer than 21 days at sea. That is the period used for people in risk areas to be quarantined.

Every vessel must complete a so-called Maritime Health Declaration Form prior to arrival. This was properly done. According to sources, even the epidemiologist Dr. Izzy Gerstenbluth went aboard the ship to show the employees that there is no risk.
