“Dutch government has to apologize for slavery”

Ahmed-Aboutaleb-RotterdamROTTERDAM - The Netherlands must officially apologize for the history of slavery. The Rotterdam mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb calls on the government to make this gesture "for the suffering caused by tens of thousands.

To finally put a stop behind this dark page in history. "At the commemoration in 2013, then Deputy Prime Minister Lodewijk Asscher called slavery a" degrading practice "and a" blotch in our history. "He expressed deep regret and remorse. But there were no apologies.

Aboutaleb spoke on Saturday during the commemoration speech at the Rotterdam slavery monument. He wants the cabinet to go a step further. What Asscher said then fitted into that time frame, says Aboutaleb. "It is now time for a next step."

The Netherlands abolished slavery in 1863 in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. That was commemorated last Sunday, 155 years later.
