ECORYS report 2012: redevelopment refinery site serious option

oil refineryWILLEMSTAD – In the ECORYS report ‘A sustainable future for Curaçao - Strategic options for Isla Isla and the site’ of March 2012, it is concluded that an upgrade (modernization) of the Isla refinery is technically, commercially and financially viable.

The general conclusion which can be drawn from this report is that the redevelopment of the Schottegat area is at least as economically profitable as the development of alternative areas on the island and will probably generate a higher welfare.

The report also points out that - despite the fact that an upgrade of the existing refinery seems to be a viable economic option - there are plenty of good reasons to pay serious attention to the strategic options of a redevelopment of the area. “A two-track policy will give the government in any case a useful and effective option to fall back on,” according to the report.

Meanwhile, the political party MFK continues to protest the 'leakage' of the report because it might bring the oil refinery’s position during the negotiations with PDVSA in danger. Alex Rosaria, leader of ruling party PAIS, said yesterday in so many words that the future of the Isla was endangered by former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte. The leader of the MFK held an important report for himself, without informing parliament.

Now that the report was leaked, it appears that Schotte lied about the content of the it, said Rosaria. Moreover, because of the secrecy, precious time was lost to continue with  the oil industry in Curaçao after the end of the lease in 2019.
