Exclusive interview with Chad Meyerson – Director Latin America & Caribbean of JetBlue

JetBlue_logoWhat was your first reaction when you learned about the island of Curaçao? Why we ask, is because not many people have heard of the island before.

I’m a certified diver, so I’ve actually heard about Curacao and I know of its world-renowned reputation as a diver’s paradise. It’s also beautiful and features a unique culture. I was definitely intrigued at the thought of potentially offering service to Curacao, and now that JetBlue will serve the island, many more Americans will learn about this best-kept-secret, and will be able to do so with reasonable fares and award-winning service on board.

What do you think about the product Curaçao, meaning what the island has to offer to its visitors? Please separate these between leisure and business.

Curacao has much to offer to its tourists, and the fact that there is a mix of properties to choose from that range from large resorts to smaller, more intimate accommodations ensures that it appeals to many different tastes. Of course, the architecture on the island is stunning and Willemsted being a UNESCO World Heritage City lends it a certain mystique.  When you add the beaches, adventure, sports, and the cultural activities, including carnival, it presents a winning combination for the traveler.

Given that JetBlue’s service will operate between New York and Curucao, we have no doubt that professionals from the financial industry will find our service to be a convenient and comfortable way to connect with Curacao’s financial institutions in order to conduct business, and I’m sure they will find time to discover the fun side of the island.

How will you help market the new destination? How will you cooperate with the Curaçao Tourism Bureau? Will we see billboards saying “Fly to Curaçao with JetBlue”?

Whenever JetBlue enters a new market, it does so with the intention of growing travel to that destination, and forming the right partnerships that will make that happen. We are working closely with Curacao Tourism to market the destination in New York, while we’ve also announced a special introductory fare for the route. In terms of the different types of advertising, we do dedicate significant resources to a variety of mediums, including social media, web marketing, email marketing, billboards, and print media, to name a few. If we find that a billboard is the way to go, we will certainly go in that direction!

What are your expectations for this new market?

Expectations are high for the route, as we wouldn’t decide to initiate service if we didn’t think that it would be a success.  We’re careful about choosing the routes we fly, and we chose to fly to Curacao because we believe that there is an untapped stream of visitors who are willing to discover this beautiful island.

Will the travelers have easy connection in New York if they want to use JetBlue to fly to Curaçao?

JetBlue has a significant route network in New York, with flights to and from a number of cities throughout the U.S., which means that travelers from many other cities we serve will have an easy time connecting through our popular Terminal 5 at JFK to Curacao. And of course, there are millions of travelers in the New York area alone, which is a good pool of travelers to draw from! They are already familiar with JetBlue, as we’re New York’s Hometown Airline, and knowing they will fly to Curacao with an airline that they love and are very comfortable with will make the decision to travel to Curacao an easy one.

Have you had any reactions from your travelers about the new destination?

There is definitely excitement about the new service from New York to Curacao. New Yorkers like having non-stop access to any given point in the world, and they will now have non-stop service to a destination that offers fun, sun and world-class diving with an award-winning airline they enjoy flying with. We are just as excited. We can’t wait to say Bon Bini to the people of Curacao for their trips to New York and points beyond, and to introduce them to the array of services that we offer on board, including free inflight entertainment, beverages and snacks, and comfortable, industry-leading legroom. They will find out why JetBlue has been awarded airline customer satisfaction honors ten years in a row by JD Power, which is a respected organization that measures customer satisfaction. The people of Curacao deserve no less.
