Four lifeless bodies washed ashore in Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD - Four lifeless bodies were found today on the north coast of the island today. These were two men and two women. The police indicated that they could be Venezuelan refugees.

If they are indeed Venezuelans, it would be the first time - as far as is known - that an attempt to reach Curaçao ends in a tragic and deadly drama. Over the past few weeks, the Coast Guard and the police have been intercepting boats with refugees several times who wanted to enter the island illegally.

4 bodies

The remains were discovered earlier today at Koraal Tabak, a spot on the rugged north coast of the island. According to police spokesman Reginald Huggins, attempts are being made to identify the bodies.

Because of the economic crisis in Venezuela, residents have been trying to find a safe haven in neighboring countries such as Colombia and Brazil for years. But the nearby ABC Islands are also popular for the refugees.

The Aruban Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes recently estimated that 12,000 Venezuelans stay in Aruba illegally. On a population of officially just over one hundred thousand people.
