Jamaloodin stays behind bars, Dos Santos free pending case

CourtWILLEMSTAD - Today, August 1, 2014, the judge in the court of first instance of Curacao considered that at this stage there is sufficient suspicion against the accused former Minister of Finance, Jamaloodin.  The request for immediate release of the accused under Article 91 Code of Criminal Procedure was dismissed. The claim for custody made by the Public Prosecutor was approved.

The retention is the next phase of the pre-trial detention and may take up to eight days and possibly be extended. For a warrant detention, there must be a heavy suspicion against the accused. On Monday a request for the suspension of the detention, requested by the defense, will be treated by the court.

The judge has ruled that Robby dos Santos, who earlier this week was arrested, must be set free immediately. The magistrate ruled that there is insufficient concrete and verifiable evidence on the basis of the current dossier justifying detention of the suspect. The magistrate, in its decision, emphasized that this decision does not mean the end of the criminal case against the suspect.

The case Maximus is now at a stage where it is necessary to confront the suspects and those involved with the preliminary results of the investigation. The mandate is being done in a different ways. This is done by means of interrogation and through arrests. In an interrogation a person receives the opportunity to make a statement, then he / she may return home. When an arrest and detention is done, the Prosecutor believes that the investigation requires that the accused should be retained for a certain period in the interest of the proper execution of the investigation.

George Jamaloodin and Robby dos Santos are suspected of any kind of involvement in the murder of Helmin Wiels.

The investigation is still ongoing.
