Jardim in the Netherlands trying to convince Government to dismiss financial instructions

IMG_0404WILLEMSTAD , THE HAGUE – Minister of Finance, Dr. Jose Jardim, is currently in the Netherlands to try to convince the Kingdom Government to dismiss the financial instructions imposed on the Government of Curacao during former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte’s term.

Yesterday, the Minister and his delegation visited the Dutch Junior Minister of Finance, Frans Weekers. The Minister Plenipotentiary for Curacao, Mr. Roderick Pieters was also present to guide the Minister of Finance during his stay in the Netherlands.

The discussions with the Dutch Junior Minister of Finance went very well, according to our sources. Both officials discussed the current financial situation of the island and what the Government plans are for the future. They also discussed the 2013 budget and the austerity measures taken by the Curacao Government. There aren’t many details yet on the conversation between the two government officials.

In the coming days, Minister Jardim will also visit the Dutch Minister for Kingdom Relations, Ronald Plasterk, Director of Customs, Director of the Tax Department, Ambassador of Angola and the International Director of Sustainable Energy of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

As we have published before, a few weeks ago the Committee for Financial Supervision (CFT) has given positive advice on the measures taken by the Curacao Government to heal the financial situation of Curacao. They also gave a positive evaluation on the six financial instructions and limitations imposed by the Kingdom Government. The Government complied with four of these instructions and is working on two more which are “hiring freeze” and past deficits which have to be covered.
