King: Prospects for recovery

Eerste troonrede koning Willem-Alexander - LampenTHE HAGUE - There are tentative signs that the global economy is recovering. For the Netherlands this means that there are prospects for recovery, King Willem-Alexander said today in his first speech at the opening of the Dutch Parliament.

The King pointed out, however, that the Dutch economy has a number of specific problems, such as high indebtedness of households and the problems at banks. The government policy is aimed at economic recovery. In addition, the traditional welfare society should be changed into a 'participatory society instead, "said the King. Changes will be especially noticeable in health care and social security.

According to the King all those who can afford it will be asked to take responsibility. That way people add 'value, not only to their own lives, but also to society as a whole. "The classic welfare state arrangements produced in current form is unsustainable,” said Willem-Alexander further. The transition to society participation is also encouraged because people like to make their own choices.
