Legalizing could be a solution to the drug problem
WILLEMSTAD - Legalization of drugs is an option to combat drug trafficking and its consequences. This is according to the Minister of Justice Nelson Navarro.
He also shares the view that the Netherlands must bear responsibility and must do more to combat drugs domestically.
The Minister has discussed this issue with his Dutch counterpart in the Netherlands during his recent working visit there. It is a global problem and the demand for drugs in the Netherlands and Europe is large and because Curaçao is a hub for drug trafficking in those countries, the Minister finds that the Netherlands and other European countries should contribute to the fight against drugs.
“It is also a responsibility of the Netherlands and that means that they have to act. I am confident that they will. I also believe that they will take additional measures in Eindhoven relating to the expansion of flights to and from our country,” said the Minister of Justice.
The minister added that legalization of drugs is also an option. Navarro could still remember that legalizing alcohol years back led to a reduction in crime.
“Maybe the same thing will happen with drugs, but all countries should have their noses in the same direction, otherwise will not. The United Nations has already begun discussions about this.”
