Minister of Foreign Affairs must resign

BlokWILLEMSTAD - The recent statement by Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs that a multicultural society cannot exist peacefully has caused great outcry on Curaçao and other parts of the Dutch Kingdom.

Several politicians and the government reacted to the statement made by the Kingdom Minister of Foreign Affairs. This was also necessary because as it is already known, Minister Blok represents the entire Kingdom and not only the Netherlands. By far the most striking reactions came from the government, the Minister of Health, Environment and Nature, Suzanne Camelia-Römer in her capacity as of her political party and that of the coalition parties PAR and MAN.

Cabinet-Rhuggenaath deeply regrets the statements of the Kingdom Minister. "The government emphasizes that Minister Blok represents four multiethnic, multireligious and multicultural countries in the Kingdom and as such represents us in our foreign relations", the Prime Minister states in an official statement. "Minister Blok's expressions are not representative of the reality in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. On the contrary."

"The government absolutely cannot agree with these statements that most certainly also touch the core of the multicultural Curaçao society." Rhuggenaath points out how important diversity is. "As Curaçao we are proud of the fact that we are a society, consisting of people from all parts of the world and living side by side in peace and harmony, despite the different ethnic and religious backgrounds."

The Curaçao multicultural society gives a better picture of the norms and values such as justice, tolerance and freedom, according to the statement. "Values shared within the Kingdom."

Political leader Camelia-Römer takes it a step further and states that Blok has to leave on the basis of his statements. "It is a disgrace that the minister represents the Kingdom that includes countries with a multiracial, multicultural society. The minister must keep the honor to himself. "

Minister Blok clearly lacks historical and cultural knowledge about the countries within the Kingdom, says Camelia-Römer. "A foreign minister of the Kingdom consisting of four multicultural and multiracial countries must have the historical and cultural knowledge of the different countries as part of his profile. And certainly knowledge of parts of the Kingdom that he must represent on the basis of his task, such as Curaçao, where the existence and identity of many of us are bound to the multiculturalism of which he denies existence."
