Pensioners: “No more measures please!”

ProtestWILLEMSTAD – About 400 pensioners gathered today in front of the Parliament building to protest the series of new measures the government will take to tackle the deplorable public finances of Curacao.

Today, members of Parliament will meet to discuss the different proposals from the Government to increase sales tax on certain products. At the insistence of the Consumers Association and retailers association of downtown (DMO)a few products were taken off the list of sales tax increase. This involves, among other things computers including laptops and perfumery products and cosmetics.

As far as the computers are concerned, these are taken away from the list of increase from six to nine percent because they are important for education. Other luxury and less healthy items remain on the list of 9 percent. These are e.g. yachts, fast food and regular restaurants, soft drinks - fruit juices (except from real juice), alcoholic beverages and tobacco.

According to the pensioners, these increases will make cost of living unbearable.
