Premier Asjes: “Accumulated deficit from 10-10-10 till end 2012 was 294 million”

Premier AsjesWILLEMSTAD – The government coalition parties Pueblo Soberano (PS), PAIS, PNP and Independent MP, Glenn Sulvaran have inherited a deficit of 294 million guilders from the government headed by former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte. This deficit was accumulated between October 10, 2010 and the end of 2012. The Minister of Finance, Jose Jardim was able to balance the budget with the help from the other Ministers of the current Cabinet.

This surplus will begin to cover the accumulated deficit, which hangs on the people of Curaçao. This is according to the Prime Minister of Curaçao, Ivar Asjes. “The numbers are telling us the truth, since October 10, 2010 till December of that year the deficit had accumulated to 64.2 million guilders. In 2011 the deficit had reached 156.7 million guilders and in 2012 the deficit was 73.1 million guilders. A total of 294 million guilders,” the Premier explained.

“There is no sense in going into details because everyone knows what happened. There are various reports indicating that the costs of health care is too high and that the pension fund will not survive if we continue this way. While the spending is higher than our income, we will continue to have a deficit,” Ajes said.

Curaçao has financial norms which are anchored in the constitution, which is the highest law of the country. This law stipulates that the government must have a balanced budget and between October 10, 2010 and the end of 2012, this was not the case.

The bill proposals to deal with pensions and basic insurance did not reach Parliament. There were some concepts which were sent to the Social Economic Advisory Board, but none of these were presented to Parliament.

Asjes laments the fact that there are certain politicians who are playing politics with the budget of the country. There are serious negotiations taking place between Minister Van der Horst and the unions representing the civil servants. Those politicians are saying that the civil servants do not have to give in and accept the austerity measures against them, because there is already a surplus.

According to the Prime Minister, the only way to balance 294 million guilders in deficit, is for the government to continue to work on a surplus in its budget. This surplus is 82 million, but the deficit is 294 million so there is a long ways to go.
