Preventive body search introduced starting today

PoliceWILLEMSTAD - To reduce the number of illegal weapons in circulation, authorities started today with the preventive body search on public roads. The starting point is the reduction of armed violence. This was reported by that the Public Prosecution Service (OM).

“The preventive body searches will be carried out periodically by order of the Public Prosecutor and is bounded by a clear legal framework,” the Prosecutor's spokesman indicated.

Pamphlets were distributed to the public to inform them about the preventive body searches. With the title “Dikon net ami?” (Why me?), people are informed about the action.

In the pamphlet, authorities inform that they are allowed to stop anyone and perform a body search on them. This is determined by the National Ordinance adopted in 2006. This ordinance stipulates that the Prosecutor can designate an area where the police can perform searches targeting illegal weapons. It is also emphasized that the police should act properly. If this is not the case, the person may send a written complaint to the Public Prosecution.
