Prime Minister prohibits the sale of lottery through the SMS system

Prime MinisterWILLEMSTAD - Premier Ivar Asjes has indicated that the government prohibits the sale of lottery through the SMS messaging system provided by the telecommunication company UTS. It is illegal in Curacao and there was never a license granted for this practice, says Asjes. Asjes’ predecessor as leader of Pueblo Soberano (PS), Helmin Wiels, has already raised the matter both in public and during parliament meetings.

Robby's Lottery owner, Robbie Dos Santos,  has been offering the possibility of buying lottery tickets through SMS, in collaboration with the public entity UTS. Former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte had already indicated that this method of selling of lottery through SMS was illegal, but he has done nothing about it. Dos Santos is one of the major contributors to Schotte’s political organization and he’s also the brother of the former Minister of finance, George Jamaloodin.

Prime Minister Asjes declared during the weekly Council of Ministers press conference that there will be an investigation into UTS involvement in the lottery sales using their system and network. Robby’s lottery gets three months to stop this practice. The Government will then decide whether and how the SMS lottery will be continued.
