Shortage of dialysis centers in Curacao

HospitalWILLEMSTAD – There are too few dialysis centers on the island for all patients. The centers are fully occupied, new patients must be sent to Colombia through the Social Security Bank (SVB). This was declared by the SVB spokesman, Wimbert Hato to the media. He calls the situation “alarming”.

Dialysis patients are those whose blood is purified artificially by a machine in a special clinic. Curacao has three of these special clinics; the General Hospital,  the Diatel at Jan Noorduynweg and Curacao Dialysis Center in Otrabanda. According to the SVB, there are currently two patients being treated in Colombia, a third has passed away unfortunately.

Previously, patients were already transferred to Aruba and Bonaire, but these need the places themselves. Internist Kenrick Berends calls the situation for these patients dramatically. If five new machines can be added on short-term, it would make a big difference, according to Berends.
