SOAW: 5.426 on welfare. ‘this must be reduced’

Government centerWILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW), in accordance with the new approach starting in the month of May, has as objective to clean up the list of people on welfare. Some of those on welfare will follow courses and then placed in jobs where possible. This way they will be less dependent on the Government and they can provide for themselves..

Currently there are 5.426 people on the welfare list and often it goes from generation to generation, which is not a healthy situation. The intention is to see how the SOAW personnel together with other Ministries and local entities can help these people. These organizations will evaluate to see how far these people on welfare are from the labor market and how the situation can be remedied so they can go to work.

For those on welfare who already had jobs, a plan will be design in which they have to participate and receive guidance so they can return back to the labor force and stand on their own two feet.

The services offered by the Social Development Sector are welfare, additional pension for those with only the Government pension, nutrition compensation for those on welfare, funds for school uniform, subsidy on water and electricity, exoneration on garbage disposal tax, pro Bono lawyers, entertainment for the elderly, nursing homes for the elderly, financial assistance with funerals for those less fortunate, assistance for neighborhood development, care for people with disability and housing during crisis.
