Supreme Electoral Council: “Record number of political parties”
WILLEMSTAD – The number of political parties is up. So far, 22 parties have declared that they will be part of the upcoming elections on September 30.
At a recent meeting of the Supreme Electoral Council (SEC), 20 of the 22 parties attended.
All parties that have indicated to or will participate in the next elections were invited to attend the meeting. The SEC also invited individuals or organizations that have requested the required documents for participation. According to the chairman of the SEC, Raymond Pacheco Römer, the number of political parties has risen to 22. There is still the possibility that it will be higher in the coming days. Some parties could also decide not to run because of the 2000 guilders they have to pay to participate in the primaries.
According to Römer this is a record number of political parties. Never before in the political history of the island has there been so many political parties. On Monday each party will get 20 minutes to present their candidates' list to the SEC for approval. This will take place at the Registrar’s Office in Otrabanda.
