Teachers’ union takes action on Education Day

Darius PlantijnWILLEMSTAD – The teachers’ union, Sitek, held a meeting this morning during working hours. This action was decided yesterday since there is dissatisfaction among the teachers with the current Minister of Education, Irene Dick.

Sitek members went this morning to their union building. The members wore mourning clothes because in their opinion, there is nothing to celebrate on Education Day. Sitek chairman Darius 'Lio' Plantin was glad that the scheduled celebration of Education Day was canceled. “There is nothing to celebrate in education at this time. Education is going through some tough times at the moment. Teachers face many problems to teach a normal class and there is no action from the government,” said the leader of the teachers’ union.

“It's about well-known cases. Lack of equipment and support. It’s about teachers that need to teach children who have to be at other levels. We’ve indicated this for years now, but we get no response from both the minister and parliament.”

Plantijn notes that local politics do not attach importance to education. “Parliament has a Permanent Committee for Education, but we hear nothing of it. How can they go about education, if they are not sitting with us around the table? In the past four years we have had seven Ministers of Education. But of all these ministers we have had the least from this minister. We hear nothing from her and we have no idea what her policy is.”

Plantijn indicated that tomorrow morning the union will meet with its members to further discuss the situation in education.
