Update: NHC has upgraded Matthew to a hurricane

Reports from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (110km/h) with higher gusts - a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Gradual strengthening is expected during the next 48 hours. Matthew is centered as of 2 p.m. AST about 190 miles (300 km) northeast of Curaçao and is moving toward the west. A general westward motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next couple of days.

A Tropical Storm Watch continues for Bonaire, Curaçao, and Aruba, where tropical storm conditions are possible beginning late today. Interests along the coasts of Venezuela and Colombia should monitor the progress of Matthew.
