War between Government and Unions has intensified

Fort AmsterdamWILLEMSTAD – According to recent information, the meeting between Minister Ettiene van der Horst (Government policy, planning and  public services) with the Unions was terminated abruptly and with a negative sphere.

The Unions have abandoned the meeting last night unsatisfied, after they did not want to accept the Government’s proposal in the controversial General Retirement Insurance (AOV) to raise the retirement age from 60 to 65.

This means that the war “war” between the Government of Curacao and the Union block has intensified and there are persistent rumors about drastic measure on the Union’s side and that a strike can be expected.

According to the Union leaders, there is no understanding between the Minister and the Unions. One of the leaders stated; “We did not accept the Government’s plan and they did not accept our proposal and this is something we cannot live with.”

Today the Union will notify Minister Van der Horst about their next step in the “retirement war” and which, in their own words, they cannot divulgate.

“This has come to a dead end now and it is up to the Government to take measures so the situation won’t escalate,” according to the Union leader.
