Zika virus contracted in Curaçao
WILLEMSTAD - For the first time someone within the Kingdom of the Netherlands is infected with the Zika virus. It's about someone who has contracted the disease on the island. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has announced this today. It is not known how the situation of the patient is and whether it is a pregnant woman.
The Zika virus was discovered earlier in one person in Curaçao, but who were infected abroad, not in Curaçao itself. In the Netherlands the disease was found in twelve people who contracted it in Suriname. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes in tropical areas, including South and Central America. People cannot infect each other.
