80-20 Act will finally be approved

Ruthmilda-Larmonie-CeciliaWILLEMSTAD - Everything indicates that the Law 80-20 will be approved in February. This is according to the responsible Minister Ruthmilda Larmonie Cecilia during the press conference of the Council of Ministers. According to the Minister, this law is now more than ever needed. She declared that it is a challenge for the government to ensure that foreigners who start a business hire local people.

The Government has noted that people of a particular nationality start a business on the island, but do not hire locals to work for them. The Minister responded to a question specifically about Chinese business owners who start a company, but do not hire locals.

Larmonie Cecilia said it is time for the government to take care of this problem. If a working permit is requested for a foreigner, this will not be granted until the government is sure that there are no locals who can do the job. It is the duty of the government to ensure employment of the population, according to the minister.

The 80-20 Act ensures that 80% of the employees are local and 20% foreigners.
