Agreement reached – teachers back to school
WILLEMSTAD – After four days of action, the teachers’ union Sitek and the government have reached an agreement on a proposal that both parties can live with. This also means that the strike is over. This is according to the president of the union, Darius Plantijn.
This was the union completely paralyzed the public education on the island. This is to put pressure on the government to attend to the list of demands that the union identified as points of concern in the education sector.
According to Plantijn, both parties have reached an agreement on 8 points. Before May 2016, both parties will sign a valid collective labor agreement. The Minister of Administrative Planning, Etienne van der Horst, will inform on the developments in safety and protection in the education sector. The protocol for the school bus drivers has to be signed before April 30 this year. There must be clarity on the courses for teachers offered by the Department of Public Schools. The analysis of the Dutch and Arithmetic method must be finished before June 30 of this year. The teachers also want clarity on the early retirement program. Vacation bonus this year will be normally paid at 6% of the salary. The parties will also seek more information on the salary indexing.
Minister Van der Horst was personally present to talk to the teachers. Here he had the opportunity to hear the concerns of all present.
