Asjes: “It’s not bad that the tax law proposal was leaked”
WILLEMSTAD – The Prime Minister of Curaçao, Ivar Asjes, believes, just as the Minister of Finance, Jose Jardim, that the discussion on the increase in the sales tax is premature. The Premier does not mind that the new tax plans were leaked to the media, but he thinks that it is still too early to talk about it in the Council of the Ministers.
“This will only happen when the Minister of Finance has approved the detailed plans of the task force, in charge of studying the possible increase in the sales tax.”
The draft ordinance mentions an increase in the sales tax from 9 to 11 percent, but also that is not sure yet, according to the Prime Minister. The business community has responded positively to the actions of the government to tackle the brackets in the sales tax. According to Asjes, the elimination of these brackets provides for a simplification of the tax system.
“The Council of Ministers does not intend to introduce new measures,” said Asjes. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Finance guarantee that there will be no more burden for the population.
