Bus drivers want to determine own tariffs
WILLEMSTAD – According to the union representing the bus drivers on the island, the Sindikato di Transporte Uni, the drivers want to determine their own tariff.
The union also said that the Minister of Economic Development, Eugene Rhuggenaath is willing to talk to them about this proposal. The Government Accountants Bureau (SOAB) recently published a report on these bus rates. The drivers decided not to accept this report. They want to do their own calculations based on fuel prices and the cost of living. The government is entitled to determine a maximum tariff.
In the first week of May the union representatives will discuss their plans with the Minister.
During a general meeting of the union, the bus drivers also decided that children traveling with an adult and sitting on their laps should also pay the fare. Earlier this was free.
