Business Association: “Economy before environment”
WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Business Association (VBC) believes that the seizure of the oil refinery’s bank account by environmental groups and citizens living under the smoke is very irresponsible. The VBC made this statement in a press release.
The Association calls the environmental organizations and the citizens to be cautious with the seizure.
According to the VBC, it is known that the Multidisciplinary Project team is seriously working on structural changes in the oil refining production to introduce a process that will result in a cleaner operation.
The use of means, such as seizure, will have dire consequences for the economy of the island and for the changes in the refining process. “This is irresponsible, since no other realistic alternative is offered by these groups and citizens,” said the VBC.
The lobbyists of the business community are concerned that the seizure of 75 million guilders could lead to the closure of the refinery. And that again is going to cost jobs.
Moreover Curaçao will lose a significant portion of its income from foreign exchange. VBC calculates about 738 million guilders.
