Campaign to promote Curaçao in the U.S. giving good results

PalmWILLEMSTAD, NEW YORK – A Curaçao delegation headed by the Minister of Economic Development, Stanley Palm together with the Curaçao Tourism Bureau (CTB) and representatives of 10 hotels on the island were recently in New York. During their weeklong stay they promoted Curaçao in the Tri-State area with New York as the base.

Representatives of JetBlue were also part of the promotional campaign, which is giving good results, focusing on the commitment the companies have made with Curaçao.

The amount of reservations and ticket sales for the bi-weekly flights to Curaçao, which starts on December 2, is really good. “Sales for December and January are very well and the expectations for the following months are also high,” Minister Palm said.

JetBlue’s position to maintain the bi-weekly flights for a long period of time has helped, the Minister said. “This promotional campaign has underlined the necessity to increase the subsidy allocated to the CTB,” Minister Palm indicated.

The Minister confirmed that he has sent a proposal to introduce a so called tourism development fee, which will be added to the tickets of the passengers. The passengers will not notice this increase, the Minister said. This Minister calculates that with this proposal, which still has to go through Parliament, the island will generate and extra 10 million guilders for the development of the tourism industry.

The Minister also hopes that the hotels will comply with the room tax they are charging. “They have to pay this to the government. There are many hotels which are not doing so, but we already have a court ruling and soon we will start collecting his tax,” the Minister said.
