Coastguard strike averted

Coast GuardWILLEMSTAD – The Coast Guard is not on strike anymore. The Minister of Government Policy, Planning and Public Services, Etienne van der Horst announced that the strike was over during a meeting last Saturday with all stakeholders.

During this meeting it was decided that the stakeholders will appoint a committee to make an inventory of all the issues brought forth by the Union. Van der Horst, who replaced Minister of Justice Nelson Navarro, notified the Coast Guard in writing about the agreement.

Forty local workers were on strike during these last two weeks because they felt discriminated against. They also accused their Dutch counterparts of harassment and other serious issues. According to Ronaldo Abrahams of the Union, the employees are doing more than is required from them and sometimes even dangerous work without getting paid for that kind of work.

Minister Van der Horst says that the aim is to have these problems resolved with two months. As for now, the Coast Guard will be operational to secure Curacao’s borders.
