Compulsory education supervision is a flop

SchoolWILLEMSTAD - The compulsory education supervision is a flop. From a recent investigation conducted by the Curaçao Court of Auditors, it shows that the government has no insight into the extent and causes of unauthorized school absence.

According to the report, one official holds full-time supervision on the compulsory schooling but is inspecting the wrong group of students who in this case have traveled abroad with permission from the Department of Education. They are legally absent. This is not the risk group of school drop outs. As a result, the so-called dropouts have a free pass.

Efforts are being made within the framework of the compulsory education law, but there is hardly any effective supervision. On average, 30,000 young people are registered in the population register between four and eighteen years. Of these, the majority is required to be in school.
