Dark clouds hanging over government

Government centerWILLEMSTAD – The catch up efforts to recuperate the infrastructure projects initiated by the Minister of Traffic, Transportation and Urban Planning, Earl Balborda is causing serious tensions within the government coalition.

The Minister indicated last week that there is a member of the coalition, who is causing some problems, which in turn is delaying the project. The reason, according to the Minister, is that the documents need to be revised by the Ministry of Finance before the green light is given to introduce the changes in the project.

Minister Balborda has not identified who this person is, but credible sources say that it is the Member of Parliament, Melvin ‘Mac’ Cijntje of the Pueblo Soberano party (PS). Cijntje is also the faction leader of the PS party in Parliament and he also represents his party in the coalition meetings.

Cijntje indicates that he will not allow the government to deviate from the rules of good governance to give more local companies the opportunity to participate in a public procurement. The MP even stated that if this means the fall of the government, then so be it.

Cijntje’s position is of total disgust to the Partido Nashonal party (PNP), which appointed Minister Balborda. The PNP leader, Humphrey Davelaar asked why a project headed by the Minister appointed by his party must become a problem in the coalition. The political leader indicated that there was no problem within the coalition when questions arose about other project initiatives like the one presented by coalition partner and independent Member of Parliament, Glenn Sulvaran.

The other coalition partner, PAIS is in a very uncomfortable position at this moment. This is according to a credible source. The light blue party did not indicate their stance on this situation.

This issue is on the agenda during the meeting of the coalition parties this Tuesday. Leaders of the parties will meet to discuss potential conflicts within the coalition and try to resolve these.
