Debate on Curaçao and Sint Maarten

Ronald van RaakTHE HAGUE/WILLEMSTAD – Today there will be a debate in the Netherlands between the Parliament Committee for Kingdom Relations and the Minister for Kingdom Relations Ronald Plasterk. Member of Parliament for SP, Ronald van Raak made some sharp statements yesterday which probably will determine the tone of the debate. He said: "In Curaçao and Sint Maarten the politicians lack the intention to cooperate with the Netherlands."

Topics for the debate are the poor financial situation of both islands and the doubts about the integrity of the St. Maarten government.

“Only when the annual accounts in the period in which Gerrit Schotte was prime minister are published, will it be clear how bad Curacao stands,” Van Raak stated. According to Van Raak, it can only get worse now than it was feared. He thinks that the situation in Curaçao will never improve, because the will of the politicians are lacking. “The current Prime Minister, Daniel Hodge, has the confidence of the Netherlands, but as soon as he clears the field, I become pessimistic about the future,” Van Raak stated.

Also for the scandals and the way politicians in St. Maarten handle it, the SP has no words. "The is no intention to tell the truth,” said Van Raak. He has no confidence that the truth will ever come.
