Disagreements within ruling party on port concession Curaçao Port Services
WILLEMSTAD – Leader of the ruling party Pueblo Soberano (PS), Jaime Cordoba, will support the concession only under two conditions. The port concession with the stevedoring company Curaçao Port Services (CPS) has been a hot topic for years now. This will be again the case during the parliamentary debate today.
It will not only be debated by the opposition parties, but also the biggest party in the coalition, Pueblo Soberano (PS), will be discussing their support for the draft concession agreement presented by the Minister of Economic Development, Eugene Rhuggenaath.
Member of Parliament for the PS party, Melvin Cijntje indicated this week that he finds the draft concession unacceptable. The leader of Cijntje’s party, Jaime Cordoba, however, said that if his two conditions are met, he will support the draft concession. The controversies are the harbor cranes and the investment in the port facilities. Cordoba also said that his party is internally debating this subject.
Parliament will meet today at the request of the opposition parties MFK and MAN. PS says that they are looking forward to this debate. Cordoba also confirmed that the criticism on the draft voiced by his party colleague Cijntje is also shared by the MAN and MFK factions in parliament.
Cijntje stressed again this week that he does not agree with the current concept and he thought that after internal deliberations, his party is on the same line. The PS MP also said that any motion in parliament against the current concept will receive his support, of course depending on the formulation.
Cordoba seems to think completely different about it and he indicated that the party will continue to talk about it to take a stand before the parliament meeting.
