Downtown Punda blocked by bus drivers
WILLEMSTAD – Small bus drivers were on strike today. They blocked the entrance to downtown on the Punda side with their buses and even deflated their tires. The police was present and the tow truck was on standby, but was unable to do anything because the drivers formed a so called human shield to prevent their buses from being towed.
The drivers of the minibuses were protesting against the tariff reductions imposed by the government.
The bus drivers have submitted a letter to the minister of Transport, Traffic and Urban Planning last Monday. The union representing these drivers indicated to the minister that she has one week to respond to their demands. One of the demands is an urgent meeting with the government.
Due to the blockade it was impossible for many people to take the public transportation. Many were against the strike. “This can be dealt with by negotiating. Why do we have to suffer?” said a public transportation user.
