Dutch Parliament wants ‘Isla letter’ before summer

Oil refineryWILLEMSTAD, THE HAGUE - The Dutch Parliamentary Committee for Kingdom Relations wants Minister Ronald Plasterk (PvdA) of the Interior and Kingdom Relations to report in writing on the developments regarding environmental issues around the Isla refinery before June 1.

In response to the questions previously asked by the committee following the controversial report of the television program Zembla on the risks to human health and the laxity of the Curaçao and Dutch government, the Minister said to the Dutch Parliament that if there is anything to report, he will do so.

That promise is binding, indicated the committee on persistence of MP Wassila Hachchi (D66). Whether there is anything to report or not, the Minister should make himself heard by June 1.

The Dutch Parliament is not taking this case lightly. Areas surrounding the refinery are very unhealthy for people to live.
