Friday decision to postpone case against Burney Fonseca

CourtroomWILLEMSTAD – The Prosecutor has asked the Court, to postpone the case against the suspect Burney Fonseka aka Nini.

According to the Prosecutor, there is sufficient evidence that Nini has acted as an intermediary between those who committed the murder of politician Helmin Wiels and the intellectual perpetrators. The Prosecutor mentioned as evidence several statements from witnesses, dozens of text messages and personal contacts in the office of a suspect in the case Maximus, the man George Jamaloodin. This, according to the public prosecutor, happened during the period from January 2013 to May 4, 2013. On May 4, all contacts stopped and on May 5, 2013, Helmin Wiels was murdered.

These are, according to the Prosecutor serious suspicions. The Public Prosecutor asked the Court for more time and space to be able to continue the investigation. The Prosecutor requested to postpone the case against Nini with several months. The Prosecutor considers that any (temporary) release of the suspect would not be possible because of the shock to the legal system. There should be no question of suspension of detention.

Nini was held on September 20, 2013 in the case Magnus. This was the reason why his lawyer protested on the further detention of her client. According to his lawyer, there are no serious reasons to keep him behind bars.

The Court will make a decision tomorrow, Friday, August 8, on whether to continue with Nini’s case or if it should be postponed. The Judge said that he would take his time to make a decision.
